advent activity 06Welcome to Parish Nursing Ministries UK (PNMUK). We are a not-for-profit Christian organisation whose purpose is to maximise the wellbeing of society in community through three specific means

  • Application of professional nursing skills to healthy living and coping with illness
  • Response to people’s inner (spiritual) needs
  • Mobilisation of ordinary members of church communities and beyond.

Parish Nurses are registered nurses with some community experience. We work from  local churches to develop a whole-person health ministry in the community.

PNMUK provides and continues to develop training for registered nurses to become accredited Parish Nurses. We are engaged in development of the theology of health and wellbeing; in articulating the spiritual component and value; and in identifying good practice. We work collaboratively with complementary organisations ; we are multi-denominational and non-sectarian.

You can arrange for someone to come and tell you more about the basic concept. There's a team of supporters who love Parish Nursing so much they've volunteered to explain it to others! Just send us a request for a visit.

There are a number of locally based Parish Nursing initiatives taking place over the the first few months of  2012.

Your kind gift will enable the work of our Parish Nurses to grow to reach more people.

Giving

Like any organisation, Parish Nursing needs regular income in order to be able to continue its work and to spread to new areas.

Our administrative costs are low and much of the work is done by volunteers meaning that most of the money which we raise goes directly to support our work on the ground therefore your gift could help to make it possible for more churches to have a parish nurse. We are grateful for all donations received, large or small. Personal Donations.

Ask yourself the question."How can I invest in something that will help churches make a difference in their communities?"

A Quote from a business consultant:

“Parish Nursing enables congregations to love their neighbour through practical and prayerful support. It has transformed churches and the communities they serve.”

Christians believe that God cares for everyone, whether or not they come to church, in a way that includes their physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing.

So they need to think about how health and faith come together both for themselves and for the people who live and work around them.

Over 40 Congregations of all denominations have recently appointed a registered nurse with community experience to their ministry teams.

These nurses often work in the NHS but volunteer a few hours a week to promote whole-person health and self-care with and through their congregations.

They have their professional background in health care and, if they also have faith, can help the church to make these connections.

You can partner with us to provide training, resources and regional support for these nurses and promote the idea more widely. We will provide you with regular stories of what is happening as a result of your investment.

A parish nurse will...

  • Encourage everyone towards healthy lifestyles

  • Give personal health advice and help someone to get the most appropriate treatment or care

  • Support and work with those engaged in pastoral care

  • Liaise with the local GP surgery and staff

  • Make visits, listen to spiritual needs as well as physical needs; offer prayer with patients when asked

  • Introduce people to appropriate voluntary agencies, health facilities or support groups

  • Offer training and opportunities for volunteering in the local community

  • Talk to community groups about health issues

  • Accompany someone to a stressful medical appointment

  • Help someone to stay on their own at home for as long as possible

  • Attend and help with services for healing

  • Work within the Code of Professional Practice (Nursing and Midwifery Council) including attention to confidentiality, record-keeping and teamwork

A Parish Nurse may work for any church part-time or full-time, on a paid or voluntary-with-expenses basis. s/he can involve other health-care professionals in the church.

Average statistics show that a volunteer Parish nurse can have significant conversations with 400 clients in a year. One third of these will include prayer.
